Wonder Woman Director On Why The Hero Doesn't Get Sexism

The place where Wonder Woman hails from sounds like a paradise for girls around the world. The mythical homeland of Themyscira is a place where women rule - and that’s all. With no men in sight, the exotic island is a tropical area with beauty, strong women, and no notions of sexism. So, when Wonder Woman does choose to leave her home for the first time, you can see how she’d be a bit confused.

If not, then don’t worry. You’ll get to see the hilarious adventure firsthand when Wonder Woman hits theaters this summer.

In an interview with USA Today, the director of the superhero flick made sure to explain how Wonder Woman would react to the outside world’s views on sex.

“She’s never met men before, so she has zero understanding of sexism in kind of a hilarious way. It just seems totally absurd to her,” Patty Jenkins said.

In the trailers, fans have seen a bit of what Jenkins is referring to. When Diana follows Steve Trevor to the outside world after he crashes onto Themyscira, she doesn’t know what is in store for her. What she finds is a bloody war and a repressive society which tells women they’re better off unseen. So, when Wonder Woman trots onto the battlefield in full costume and charges forward, the scene sticks out.

Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that's raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins, from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg & Geoff Johns, story by Heinberg & Zack Snyder and Jason Fuchs, and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis, Saïd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner and David Thewlis.
